Emergency AC Repair & Maintenance Tips
Having your air conditioner break down in the middle of a hot day, or at any time, can be miserable, and unless you’re a native of the Sahara Desert who can put up with a little heat, you’ve got yourself a problem you need to be fixed and fast. Now, calling for professional help right away may seem like the only way to proceed in this scenario, but before you pick up the phone, give your system a look for yourself. After all, it’d be a shame to have to pay professionals to come over to fix a simple problem you could have just as easily solved on your own, right?
Repair Tips for Homeowners
If your AC breaks down suddenly, it’s highly possible something happened not too long ago that caused it to malfunction. The first thing you need to check is if it’s power got somehow disconnected; perhaps the plug detached, or maybe a circuit breaker tripped that was previously feeding power to your AC. If it’s not a power issue, then try checking your thermostat. It’s quite possible for it to have the batteries dead, which would explain why setting or resetting it seems not to take effect. Lastly, check your air vents and air filter. Maybe something got stuck inside that was obstructing your air flow, or your filter is just dirty.
Dealing with Some Common Problems
Two of the more common AC problems you might have with your AC unit are overheating and blowing hot air, or conversely, having it ice over and ceasing to function. For the former problem, a few things you can try include checking your thermostat settings (that’s the case more often than you’d think) or checking your outside unit for trash or any object that may be obstructing the airflow. For the latter problem, on the other hand, try de-icing it yourself and see how that plays out. Switch it off for a couple of days and let it thaw out, or if you want, you can help speed up the process by using hair dryers.
Regardless of the problem you face, you need to keep one thing in mind at all times: Never take apart more than you’re sure you can put back together on your own. The object of solving your AC problem on your own isn’t to push you further down into financial crisis. Cooling FX wants to help customers with prevention and repair tactics alike. But, you know what they say right? Prevention is better than a cure.
Maintaining Your HVAC System
Cooling FX knows there are a lot of things you can do on a daily basis to make sure your AC system remains in perfect working condition. Even the simple act of wiping a dust cloth over it once a week could save you a lot of money in repairs and cleaning out vents. And why stop at just the indoor unit? You would be doing yourself a favor if you periodically check on the outdoor unit, keeping it free from debris and animals that want to take shelter inside, and changing your air filter when it was time.
